Embracing Simplicity This Holiday Season
November is here, and I’m definitely team Christmas as soon as Halloween is over! I hold off on decorating the house until Thanksgiving, but I’m definitely watching holiday movies and listening to Christmas Music. It is really easy, though, to get caught up in the whirlwind of shopping lists, holiday events, and that endless to-do list, which I try every year to avoid. I refuse to allow the stress and clutter that can come with overbuying and over committing to take over the true magic of the season. If you’re someone who gets overwhelmed this time of year, I encourage you to step back and consider a different approach: embracing the simplicity of the season. Let’s talk about how to cultivate a holiday filled with meaningful moments rather than overfilled calendars and long shopping lists of things you may not really even need or want.
1. Buy Less, Experience More
During the holidays, many of us feel the pressure to give the “perfect” gifts. But in reality, the joy of the season comes not from the number of presents under the tree but from the shared experiences and memories. Instead of focusing on buying multiple items for everyone, consider quality over quantity. Think about giving experiences rather than things: a special dinner, tickets to a show, or a fun family outing can often leave a lasting impact without adding physical clutter to our lives.
Try This:
Create a short, thoughtful list of gift ideas for each person you’re shopping for, focusing on items or experiences that hold true meaning. Let go of the pressure to buy endless presents and embrace the idea that thoughtful gifts don’t need to be numerous.
2. Simplify Your Decor
This is a big one for me. It’s tempting to go all out with holiday decorations, but more often than not, this leads to a cluttered home and more work come January when it’s time to pack everything up. Embrace the concept of “less is more” by choosing a few focal points to decorate. By paring down, you’ll create a more serene environment that feels festive yet peaceful. A few strands of twinkle lights go a long way!
Try This:
Set aside a few timeless decorations that truly bring you joy. The warmth of candlelight, a simple wreath on the door, or a few cherished ornaments can create a cozy holiday feel without overwhelming your space.
3. Be Intentional with Your Time
Holiday parties, family gatherings, and seasonal activities can fill up your calendar quickly, leaving little room to actually enjoy the holiday season. Instead of saying “yes” to every invitation, take a step back and consider what events and traditions are truly meaningful to you. Setting boundaries with your schedule can create space for relaxation and reflection, helping you to not feel rushed and stressed.
Try This:
Look at your calendar and choose a few activities that align with your intentions for the season. Remember, it’s okay to say “no” to events that you really just don’t want to go to. By being selective, you’ll make room for the things that matter most, like spending quiet time with family, baking holiday treats, or just curling up on the couch with the tree lit watching your favorite holiday movies (mine are The Family Stone, While You Were Sleeping, The Holiday, White Christmas, Elf, Single All the Way. Four Christmases and Love the Coopers) .
A Season of Simplicity
This holiday season, give yourself permission to embrace simplicity. Let go of the clutter, the long to-do lists, and the urge to overdo it. By focusing on quality time, thoughtful gifts, and intentional schedules, you’ll create a holiday experience that leaves you feeling calm and at peace.
